Still Wandering

one year later...

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of Wandering Illustrator - and what a year it's been! It was one of those weird years where, looking back, it seems like I'm in the same place I was 365 days ago (not physically in the same location - I'm talking emotionally, spiritually...something on a deeper level), but when I look a little closer, I realize that I really have changed quite a bit and adapted to certain situations with a little more (or less, in some cases) grace than I would have imagined.

Today--June 26th--was my one year anniversary at work. I sat in my office this morning going through my projects for the day thinking how different my emotions were this time last year. I'd just moved 2000 miles away from the first place I really felt accepted and "settled" to a city where I didn't know a single person to start a job I'd never done before in a professional setting. And today I sat there doing a job I know how to do - I'm not saying they don't throw me a few curve balls now and then, but I can hold my own. As far as being "settled," I don't think that's really happened yet, but I'm getting there.

So anyway, Pat was in town last weekend and, well, that rocked. We spent Friday moving all my heavy crap from my apartment in Phoenix to the new (it's old, but you get it) house in Scottsdale. I rented a pimpin U-haul van (that, on the inside, looked like it would be useful for dangerous live animal transports) and we got the job done in 3 1/2 loads. Not too shabby. We ate maybe the world's best pizza, we saw Knocked Up (which was totally worth my $9.50 just to see Pat's reaction to the labor-room shot of a baby crowning - he nearly fell out of his chair), we went to Borders (of course), we hit up the piano bar, and basically did awesome things, as we are wont to do. I would imagine Bea has a detail-filled blog in the offing (cough*hint*cough). It was a great time for sure (the struggle to get a too-large couch through a too-small door incident notwithstanding...).

PS - I am blogging from my bed. Let's hear it for wireless internet - whee! (That's what you say when you're having fun. You refer to yourself and some other people.)

*mush alert*

i love you, and i'm so proud of you for taking the risk and going out there. i LOVE telling people what you do - because then i seem cool by association or something. or less of a failure.

"What do you do Haley?"

"Oh, well, I graduated from college and got rejected from 4 grad schools and don't have a job or anything so I babysit an eccentric 8 year old 3 days a week. But my SISTER - she's a medical illustrator in Phoenix at the Barrow Neurological Institute."

"WOW! That's awesome!"

"I know."

;) love love. CANNOT WAIT to move in and get a job and most importantly, have fun with you! ok, I lied a little. I can wait to get a job. the end.
