Transatlanticism
Have I mentioned that I love the band Jump, Little Children? Well I do. Granted, I've only been listening to their music for about two weeks now, but they are pretty much everything I like about music. I attended my second JLC concert this past Friday night. They actually played here in Augusta (which, I am told, they don't do very often since Augusta isn't exactly a mecca for the 20-something crowd), so six of my friends and I went to hear the concert. We actually hung around and met them after the show - they are extremely friendly down-to-earth kind of people. So that was fun!
Today I am stuck in the studio all day working on projects and studying anatomy. I just finished my pen and ink illustration of an ischial bone and managed not to get too much ink on myself (see, this is the beauty of computer communication because you can't see the giant splotch of ink on my forearm as I type this. Hmmm...just gave myself away, didn't I?). I can finally have a pop now though (ahhh, the freedom of calling it pop - they make fun of me down here when I call it that) because I'm done with the ink illustration. Caffeine makes your hands shake, and that makes for suboptimal line-work illustrations. However, not having caffeine leaves me less than coherent, so I'm not sure if the tradeoff is worth it... Now I get to move on to two surgical instrument illustrations - you all envy me, I know. :)

Ah, I must first and foremost explain this amazing picture to your left. We medical illustration grad students, as a group, are the coolest people you'll ever meet. Factual proof is displayed by exhibit A: this photo. We were given the job of taking a class picture to put up on the official MCG website. Classes in the past were boring and took the ubiquitous "standing in two rows by the [insert campus landmark here]" picture. But we, the class of 2006, wanted to be just a bit different. So we hiked a mile back along the Savannah river until we came to a clearing where we proceeded to take several pictures including: us standing in a line, one behind the other, from shortest (Diantha at 5'3'') to tallest (Mike K. at 6'4'') leaning in such a way that all you could see were our heads; all of us peeking out from behind a giant tree; and the picture you see before you. This was the winning pose which we fondly call our "rockstar pose." Think of any CD cover that involves a photo of all the band members - one person, usually the lead singer, is gazing broodingly into the camera as the other members stand about in various stages of disinterest and introspection. In this scene, I am playing the role of the lead singer. See? See how we're cool?
Right, so anyway, today was one of those crazy days where I was insanely busy but got nothing accomplished. The morning and afternoon hours were spent in search of a dress for Emily who will be attending her boyfriend's military ball next month. She found a gorgeous dress...and ah he'ped (say this with a thick southern accent). We ate lunch/supper - lupper, if you will - at Chili's (we being me, Alissa, Emily, and Mike P). Then I went to the school and spent the evening hours doing some actual school work. I managed to get surprisingly little accomplished.
I guess the only other big new would be...wait...what am I saying? This isn't big news - this is huge...gigantic...enormous....GINORMOUS news! I, Kristen of Apartment #2 (doesn't have quite the ring to it that Anne of Green Gables does...) will be spending my spring break iiiiiiiin.......AMSTERDAM!!! Yay for cheap plane tickets and student loans! Alissa's boyfriend is from there, so we will stay with him and have a jolly good time. That's all my news!
Happy Birthday to my wonderful Mom!!!

So here I am in my cubicle (or, in Anne of Green Gables speak - my "Gray Box of Delight." For those of you who have never seen the Anne of Green Gables movie, just smile politely and read on) after a hard mornings work in the cadaver lab. Oh the joy. For those of you who are curious - and I'm certain all of you are - we opened the cranial cavity, removed the brain, and studied the cranial nerves. Bone saws and a chisel and rubber mallet were involved in the process. It was not pretty. It did not smell good. However, the brain is one amazing structure and seeing firsthand how it's connected to the rest of the body is quite the privilege. There, I'm done with any and all cadaver-related issues for at least a couple weeks - I promise.
I went to Charleston, SC this past weekend with Alissa and Kathy. It is such a cool city! There are all these great old houses, cool little shops, and it's right on the ocean - what more could you ask for? We ate supper at BubbaGump Shrimp (yes, as in Forrest Gump) and then went to a Jump Little Children concert (or Jump, as they're also known) It was GREAT!!! For all you back home I highly recommend looking them up - they have an awesome eclectic kind of sound. The concert got out at 1:30am, and yes, we drove home. We had to stop at the Waffle House for a pick-me-up at about 3:00. It's a wonder how much coffee and a waffle will wake you up. We rolled into Augusta at 5:00am...I must be getting old, because I haven't been up that late in, oh, two years.
Well, I suppose I've put off my real work long enough. Time to go draw my pubic bone! Well, not MY pubic bone...just A pubic bone...you know how it is...

Between the Dim & The Dark
Yay for no classes on Wednesdays! This important fact allows for two very good things: 1. I can sleep in on Wednesday mornings, when every other morning I have to be to school by 7:30 (see entry on parking from a few weeks ago). 2. It allows my fellow classmates and I to have fun on Tuesday nights. Case in point: last night we went to Wild Wings (yes, the place with 30 different kinds of wings) where they have Music Trivia on Tuesday nights from 9-12. Apparently this is a common thing here in the south, although I've never heard of it done in the mid-west. But perhaps it is, I can't say for sure. Anyway, they play live music and in between songs, they ask questions that you and your team write the answers to. The winning team gets prizes. Sadly, my team came in second, so no prizes - but, we did have a good time!

Twentysomething
"Ahhhhh, Friday" she sighed. I am a hands down supporter of the three day weekend. If I had a genie in a bottle, I'd wish for three day weekends every week. Ok, so I lie. If I had a genie in a bottle, first, I'd cover the top and shake the bottle up a bit, just to see what would happen to the genie. (You'd think he'd be ok because they're just blue smoke, right?) Then, I would make my wishes...a process that would take approximately 3 years, 7 months, and 13 days because, as we all know, decisions are not my strong point. Unless I'm in a shoe store (buy or don't buy? Always buy.), or standing on the edge of a cliff (Dance around wildly or stand carefully? Stand carefully.), or...well, you get the idea.
Wow, would you look at that. I managed to waste almost an entire paragraph on the subject of magic genies. Huh.
So anyway, I watched Fight Club the other night with some friends and I must say, while still gory and a little disturbing, it was better than I thought the first time I saw it in part four years ago. I wish my hallucinated alter-ego looked like Brad Pitt. (For those of you who have never seen the movie, no, I'm not crazy. Just see the movie.)
Mike took us ladies out to supper last night at Wild Wings. Apparantly this place is a big deal here in the South lands, and with 31 different types of wings, why wouldn't it be? Ahem. Yes, so after a Ranchilada chicken salad, we all went back to Diantha and Alissa's place and watched the season premiere of Joey. Hmm, I'm not sure what to think about the show. While funny, it's no Friends...maybe it'll grow on me in a couple weeks.
Hope you all have a great weekend!

Currently Watching: Collateral
I just had the best Labor Day weekend to date. Three of my classmates, two of their friends, and I all went beach camping on Hunting Island just of the coast of South Carolina - and it was SO much fun! The picture to the left is Mike, me, Alissa and her dog Molly, and Emily and her dog Moby sitting on some toppled over palm trees on the beach. Our tent was about 50 feet from the ocean - definitely a change from the regular inland camping that I'm used to!
Right now we are getting a bunch of rain thanks to wonderful Hurricane Frances. Florida has really been getting pounded in the last few weeks and we've been getting quite a bit of rain as a result. My backyard looks very much like a lake. I'm contemplating investing in a small watercraft along the lines of a dinghy or an inflatable raft to make the trip from my door to the mailbox a little less wet. The good part to all this rain is the fact that my car is clean for the first time in almost 3 months.
