I'm a real person now. Yep, I've been an actual working stooge for three whole days.
I had orientation on Monday. That was fun. (sense the tone) I had to be at employee health by 7am to get my TB test read, then I had to take the papers confirming my TB test over to security so I could get my picture taken for my badge. After standing in line to get a slightly yellow-tinged picture of myself put on a plastic card, I hustled over to the orientation building where I spent the next 8 1/2 hours learning about the history of St. Joseph's and the difference between the Blahblahblah health plan and the blahBLAhblaH245* health plan and the myriad reasons why it is bad to dispose of sharps in anything other than the sharps container and why you NEVER run on a barge. (I'm lying about that last one. Two points if you can tell me who said it to whom and what phrase it was in response to). Then, once my will to live had been sufficiently stolen from me, I had to go BACK to the security office and stand in line AGAIN because they spelled my name wrong on my badge. I went to bed at 9:30 that night.
Tuesday was my first day at work. Our department is moving to the new tower building sometime between July and October. Once we're there, I'll have my very own office. For now, I'm sharing an office with the senior medical illustrator - he's been there 12 years and is great at what he does. But, he's buried under an insane mound of projects to be done. Enter Kristen. So, that first day, we went over the general department orientation stuff (what to do when the fire alarm goes off, who is in charge of finding the copyright information, how to use the illustration database, who brings cake for whose birthday), took a tour of the important BNI and hospital locations, had lunch in the cafeteria, then took a tour of the new BNI tower, and then went over my first projects. Right now I'm working on the illustrations for two journal articles and a book chapter. Since I've never done this before, it's a bit overwhelming and fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants-ish. But I like the work I'm doing and the people I work with seem very nice, so I think this is going to be a great job. Just waiting for that first paycheck so I can, you know, eat and stuff.
My apartment is still in moving-in chaos. I'm hoping to get it finished up this weekend. Then I'll have some pictures.
Love love.

The One With Phoebe's Ex-Partner

PHOEBE: Yeah, that was Leslie calling again to see if we can get back together. That's the twentieth time today! And good luck Leslie!
MONICA: Wow, she must have hurt you pretty bad, huh?
PHOEBE: Well, yeah. Y'know, we were best friends, ever since we were little, our Moms worked on the barge together.
MONICA: Oh, you two must have been so cute running around on a barge.
PHOEBE: You never run on a barge!
