Yesterday I was a mere Medical Illustration grad student. But today...today I am a surgeon. :) We started our animal surgery class this week and today was my day to go. I had a great time!
We started out by scrubbing in and gowning up. Alissa and I were a surgical team and our assignment was to perform a nephrectomy (removal of a kidney) on our pig. I was the lucky head surgeon, so I did all the cutting, tying off, and suturing. It was so cool to see the organs in action. I can now say I've seen and heard and felt the heart beat, the lungs inflate, peristalsis of the digestive tract, etc. It was one of the most amazing things I've had the privilege to see. I love grad school. And it turns out, I've got a knack for suturing, so if any of you ever need to be stitched up, I'll be happy to oblige.
The picture to the left is me in action. I've edited out the stuff that some strange people would term "gross," so if parts look a little funky, that's why.
