Currently Playing: Ben Folds

Rockin' the Suburbs

I saw an awesome surgery yesterday! It was a repair of a perforated eardrum (or a Tympanoplasty, if you will). I went in there assuming it would be the typical "put a piece of papery stuff over the hole" type of fix. Ah, one should never assume. It turned out that the young man had a very tortuous ear canal, so the surgeon wasn't able to get a clear view of the eardrum. They had to make a postauricular incision (I love using medical jargon! Basically they made an incision behind the ear) and accessed the eardrum from the back - crazy! I'm going to try and make it to another ear surgery this next week - it will be an oval window/round window repair, so I'll get to see the auditory ossicles (ear bones - they are SO small!) and the beginning of the hearing mechanism and everything. Ah, why can't all medical illustration be this cool? Why must we have histology? Why? Why?

Here is an adorable picture of Molly. She was sleepy.

I went in for my annual TB test today. Mike, Alissa, Kathy and I all trooped in together and they did all our injections one after the other. It kind of reminded me of those movies where they show the new army recruits going through all their medical tests and things in a big warehouse kind of room. Except we didn't have to stand there in our underwear.
