Currently Watching: Big Fish

I've been searching recently for well-priced plane tickets. I want to go visit my fabulous sister in equally-fabulous London over my spring break in April. I have yet to find tickets that meet my criteria (i.e. are under $600), but I have encountered one thing that brightens my day. As I was looking for tickets on the British Airways website, I discovered a delightful difference in they way they phrase their "wait" messages. On travelocity.com, united.com, etc., they all display some variation of "Please wait while we search for your tickets." Well, on the British Airways site, they ask you to "please wait whilst we search for your tickets." Whilst. I love it. It's so British.

As I'm typing this little post, there is an advertisement playing at the top of my screen encouraging me to "Tip a sleeping cow - Get a FREE PS3." Hmmm, ok... It's not nearly as bad as the one I saw once that was something along the lines of "pop Santa's zit, win a big screen tv." So strange.

My family came to see me last weekend - it was so much fun! Since we had never been there before, we went to Savannah on Saturday. It's such a beautiful old city. We had a picnic lunch at the beach on Tybee Island, took a carriage ride through downtown Savannah, walked along River Street, ate dinner at a seafood restaurant - lots of fun. Sunday was my parents 29th wedding anniversary and Monday was my 23rd birthday.

Haley stayed for an extra couple of days - thanks, Haley! Oh, and you'll be pleased to know that the church on Wrightsboro on the way to school finally fixed their grammatical error on their sign. To fill in the rest of you - they had a sign that proclaimed "No one is to good or to bad to be saved" (it hurts me just to type it that way). They have finally changed it to the much more grammatically friendly "No one is too good or too bad to be saved." I do wonder who told them it was wrong before...

Stand Up

So there's this guy I see around Augusta - he will give you further insight into why my fair city is so unique (this missive will expound upon the lessons we learned about Augusta many months ago regarding the hand painted "For Sale By Onwer" sign (please recall that the "Onwer" part was the sign-painter's mistake and not my mis-type)). But I digress...back to my story.

There is a man whom I have happened to drive past approximately four times this summer. He would not be of significant interest were it not for his mode of transportation. No, actually his mode of transportation (a bicycle) is relatively normal - it is what he tows behind this bicycle that brings mirth to my day. Each time I've seen this man he has been pedaling up Wrightsboro Road with a push lawnmower roped to the back of his bike. From what I can deduce, he is earning some honest summer wages by mowing lawns and uses this "lawnmower roped to the bike" method of traversing from house to house. Or perhaps this is his take on a riding lawnmower...

Augusta also boasts what I would assume is one of the most concentrated populations of mullet wearers south of the Mason-Dixon line (look at me being all southern by bringing up the Mason-Dixon line...I can guarantee you that back home in Nebraska no one gives a hoot about the Mason-Dixon line). Anyway, there are mullets a-plenty here in town. Mullets in all shapes and forms - from the relatively short, usually wavy 80's mullet, to the long, flowing waist-length NASCAR-fan mullet, from the popular fem-mullet (the female version) to the rare and proud species of skullets (bald patch on top)and bullets (totally bald except for the mullet in back), Augusta has much to be proud of. Oh yes, much indeed.

Enough of my sarcastic ramblings - I'm off to bed and tomorrow my parents and my sister are coming to visit! Could I BE any more excited

Ok ok, so it's been awhile. Shame and remorse fill my being. What can I say, though - this summer has been crazy with a big ol' C...followed by an equally large RAZY (for those of you who need help putting that together, that's "CRAZY"). Anyway, I am back and now I shall catch you up.

So school is insane. I have literally never in my life been this busy. Projects on top of projects - it's just never ending. As I am typing this I'm staring at the computer screen with unblinking eyes - my ocular functions have shut down on me due to lack of sleep. I have not slept in nearly two days. So why am I taking time to write this post rather than getting some much needed sleep, you ask? Well, I've hit that point where I'm SO tired that I'm not tired. I'm in that zombie-like state where your eyes stay open out of habit and you just lie in bed and think about how tired you are but you can't sleep. Hmmm, maybe I should just read this little paragraph back to myself - not exactly a thrilling string of phrases. So I shall move on...

I just got back from a conference in California - it was a meeting of the Association of Medical Illustrators. Lots of fun and California is just beautiful. I have also become a fan of the California way of changing lanes - you simply drive directly at the chunk of road you want to occupy (no matter how small or filled with other cars it may be) and assume that a space will magically open up on the jam-packed freeway for your oversized SUV.

I did get to see some sights while I was there - went to Santa Barbara one evening (very cool town), and went to the beach in Malibu on Monday. Bought myself some SPF 50 Ocean Potion brand sunscreen and still managed to burn. I think this was due to two factors: 1. my uber-pale skin tone that borders on the line between "cooped up in the lab all the time" Science nerd pasty, and true albino (ok, so I exaggerate a bit, but I do have to buy the lightest makeup on the market, which in Clinique brand is labeled "pale" and in Covergirl brand is more pleasantly titled classic ivory. Needless to say, I buy Covergirl brand). and 2. the Ocean Potion sunscreen, while catchily titled with a rhyming moniker and kicky packaging, seemed a bit too boastful of it's powers. The "GREAT SCENT!!!" turned out to be something along the lines of orange sherbert gone bad and the "SMOOTH, EASY ABSORBING FORMULA!!!" turned out to be sticky and not what I would call "easy absorbing." They should have been more sparing with the exclamation points and a little more liberal with the product testing before selling.

ANYWAY! I'm feeling a tad droopy, so I'm going to go lie in bed for awhile...see if that works... Hope you all are doing well. Cassie, I hope you're loving Colorado!

I hope you all are enjoying your holiday weekend - 4th of July is just the best. I love those big neighborhood / family get-togethers. No big plans for me this holiday - just work work workin' on projects.

I did have fun this past Friday, though. They just opened an IKEA in Atlanta, so a bunch of us made the trek up there to check it out. Oh my gosh - I am in love. That store just has the coolest stuff - and it's so cheap! I think I went a little nuts in there. I would walk by bins filled with things like cute throw pillows for $1.50, or cool light fixtures for $4.00, or saucepans for $2.50, and I would just stop and stare and mutter things like "It's so cheap. How can it be so cheap?" I managed to find myself quite a few fun things to jazz up my little apartment a bit. I'm a bargain shopper born and raised, so IKEA is like my Mecca. Haley, we might just have to go there when you come visit.

Currently Reading: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I love books by British authors - they are chock-full of fantastic words and phrases. Haley, I am expecting you to come back from your semesters in England using sentences just rife with these ingenious idioms.

I am currently reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I've come across some great examples of what I'm talking about, including:

"a pronounced stoutness about the tum" (a potbelly)
"cajoleries" (persuasive comments)
and one of my favorites - a description of the fearsome, yet unintelligent monster "the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal - daft as a brush, but very, very ravenous."

First, happy 23rd birthday, Heathy-poo! Love ya!

Summer semester is not cool. Oh, ha... look at my pun. Totally unintentional. Anyway, we are so swamped with work right now, it's just insane. And it was 98 today and very humid. So there it is, two reasons summer semester is not cool.

But, on a much brighter note, my best friend got married last weekend - to another one of my best friends! That's right, Aunnee and Heath finally tied the knot. It was the most beautiful wedding I've been to. Sure sure, I'm a little biased, but it really was wonderful. Aunnee's brother (who is a pastor) gave the wedding message/sermon and it was great. Heath's uncle (who is also a pastor) married them. Aunnee sang a song to Heath that brought tears to my eyes (which I refused to let fall, so then my nose started running and I was sniffling for a bit). Aunnee's dad sang two songs. The reception was wonderful. ~sigh~ It was just a great day.

This will be my quick update for now... Hopefully sometime soon I can write a little more. Cassie, I'm interested to hear any stories you have from your cleaning endeavors. I hear Grandma's apartment doesn't retain orderliness for long...
