Observation: Southern boys wear a lot of pink. This phenomenon has come to my attention slowly over the last few weeks, as it is not a blatant "everyone's doing it" kind of craze - just the random boy every other day or so wearing a pretty pink shirt. And it's not even a Manly (said with a deep growly voice) pink - no, it's a pale, little-bit-lighter-than-pepto-bismol pink. In relating this observation to two of my fellow classmates this morning, I was informed by the Georgia native that Frat boys wear pink. Apparently, the combination of a pastel colored polo or button down shirt (often pink) and matching plaid shorts is all the rage for the well-dressed Frat boy here in the South. I choose to term this style "golf glam" and will inwardly snicker at those wearing said style.
My first Anatomy exam (both lecture and lab) is on Thursday. Eek. I can't believe how much stuff we have to know for this first test! I've spent hours a day going over the endless mountains of material and I still am not ready in the least. ~sigh~ Ah well, no one ever said grad school was going to be easy. I will just have to buck up and make the best of it!

Currently Watching: Top Gun
So here I am at school a full hour and a half before my Tuesday classes start. "But why," you ask, "why this madness? Why shouldst thou have to be in ye olde illustration studio at 7:30am?" The answer is simple: Parking. Unless I hit the perimeter parking lot at 7:30 on the dot, there will be absolutely no place to park within walking distance of campus. With the insane combination of 8:00am classes for every student on campus and parking construction going on that has closed down nearly half of the original lots, the number of available spaces is admittedly few. Thus I am here, and you - ah yes, you are afforded the joy of another xanga posting from me.
I saw the movie Top Gun for the first time last night. I do realize that I am about a decade and a half behind the rest of the population in my viewing schedule, so you can save your exclamations of surprise that I had, up until 8:00 last night, never seen the movie Top Gun. I must admit that in true 80's movie fashion, it was extremely cheesy, but nonetheless entertaining. When Goose was taken into the Wild Blue Yonder, I was empathetic towards Maverick. Would he fly again without his faithful wingman? And when he overcame the odds and saved Iceman from what could have been a firey death, well I was just awash with tears... Ok, so maybe I'm lying, but still, it was a good movie.
Today I start my first Medical Illustration classes. I'm looking forward to learning more illustration techniques, but I'm not looking forward to adding the extra work on top of Anatomy. I hope everyone who's starting classes around this time has a great first week!

Currently Watching: Deliverance
Have you ever seen the movie Deliverance? Thanks to a spontaneous movie night, I have. It started out as an innocent conversation about canoeing and kayaking in Georgia and ended with one of the most disturbing movies I've seen to this date. If you're in the mood for some rollicking banjo music, inbred mountain people, crazy canoeing hijinks, and lots and lots of death and gore, then this is the movie for you.
So anyway, I had a great 22nd birthday. I got to experience the nightlife of Athens, Georgia (home of the University of Georgia) and had a mighty good time. Now I'm trying to settle in and study on a regular basis for my Anatomy class...so far, it's been a failed effort... Hope you're all having a good week!

Such a great surprise! My fabulous friend Jerilyn flew in to Atlanta yesterday, rented a car, and surprised me at my apartment here in Augusta - I had no clue she was coming! I was just sitting on the couch eating chicken nuggets, and there she was. So last night I drove her around Augusta and showed her the "sights." We also made a quick jaunt to South Carolina so she could add that to her list of states she's been to. Had a great supper at the one and only Pizza Joint (best pizza ever) and came back here and watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Great ceremony, but does anyone else think the Athens Olympic flame looks like a giant flaming cigarette? I myself prefer the giant flaming bowl shaped Olympic flames, but maybe that's just me. Anyway, a bunch of my classmates are taking me (and now Jerilyn, too) to Athens, Georgia tonight (where the University of Georgia is) to celebrate my 22nd birthday, which is tomorrow. Should be fun!
And happy 28th anniversary to my wonderful parents!

Currently Watching: Legends of the Fall
Holy cats (to borrow a phrase from the wonderful Jen) it rains in Georgia! Today we begin what looks to be a solid week of rain rain rain. From what I hear, it takes about a teaspoon and a half of precipitation to start some heavy duty flooding, so I'm choosing to be glad I live towards the top of a giant hill...although it makes the trek home from classes something of a misery (the hill, and now also the rain). Another Georgia phenomenon - the raindrops fall straight down from the sky. I know all you fellow midwesterners are thinking "What? How can this be? In all my years I've only seen rain streaming down at no less than a 30 degree angle!" Well, I'm here to tell you that this craziness is true. According to the locals, this is known as "big fat straight rain" (strangely reminicent of Forrest Gump's description of the rain in Vietnam).
After another wonderful stint in the cadaver lab today, I will be heading home to prepare a dish for the pot-luck that my fellow classmates and I are having tonight. What will I be making, you ask? I shall whip up what can be described as a food rivaled in deliciousness only by the sweet ambrosia of ancient Greek mythology - Cinnamon Puffs. These little gems are oh-so-easy to make, yet their goodness simply boggles the mind...and the tastebuds. If you come to see me here, I shall make them for you. See how I use bribes to lure you to visit me? ;)

So it's Wednesday of my first week of classes and things are going well! I've spent five hours so far disssecting my very first cadaver...it's just such a special time in a young woman's life, her first cadaver *tear* :) Seriously though, it's very interesting and once you get past the wierdness, it's really very cool to see what makes the human body work. Other than that, I've just been enjoying getting to know people - all my classmates seem great so far - and hanging out in my new surroundings. Welp, gotta get to another round of dissection, so I'll write more later!

Ahhh, here it is. The long-awaited xanga site from the one and only me. Ok, so maybe it's not long-awaited, maybe it wasn't even remotely looked forward to, but you're here, aren't you? So here it goes - hopefully this will keep you all updated on my life when I don't get the chance to send those wonderful personal e-mails (which I will still attempt to do).
So, my mom, dad, sister and I left for Georgia at 5am on July 29th. We got here about 6pm on Friday the 30th. Loooooooooong drive - not my favorite, but the part through Tennessee and Kentucky was really pretty - lots of mountains and trees and things...very un-Nebraska like. So I got all my stuff moved in, then bought quite a few things at Wal-mart, so my cute little casa is complete. I love it! Except for the bugs. And the lizards. Ok, so they have these huge flying cockroach kind of bugs called Palmetto bugs - they are freaking disgusting and I've found at least 7 of them in my livingroom in all stages of feisty, dying, and dead. Not fun. But the worst was the lizard... I will now regale you with what is soon to become a folk tale that shall be passed down from generation to generation.
The Story of Kristen and the Lizard
It was a bright and sunny summer afternoon in Georgia. The drone of cicadas cut through the afternoon heat while the shadows from the surrounding tall trees threw patterns on the front door window of apartment #2. This was the home of a fascinating and talented young woman whose name was Kristen.
Now Kristen was sitting in her living room reading a book and enjoying the patterns of dark and light playing across her front door window blinds, when suddenly a new shadow caught her eye as it scampered - scampered? - through the leafy shadow-foliage. Kristen went to investigate this new visitor. It was a lizard. Not a large lizard, but something akin to a gecko, about six inches in length. As it was merely crawling along the outside of her door, she thought "Why this little guy is kind of cute" and went back to her reading.
Twenty minutes later, disaster struck.
Hearing a plop about three feet to her left, Kristen looked up from her book to find the nasty green invader had made it's way under her front door (where she later discovered a large gap between door and floor), up the wall, across the ceiling and had dropped to the ground a few feet from her seated form. Needless to say, Kristen was a little freaked. She searched nearby for a device to trap this unwelcome visitor and her gaze fell upon an empty Pringles can. Grabbing the cardboard cylinder, she snuck up on the lizard. However, the little vermin had a trick up its green lizard sleeve. When she got within a foot of the beast, it jumped - yes JUMPED - at her, and Kristen fell shrieking backwards.
The ensuing scramble between lizard and girl lasted nearly twenty minutes. Through cunning and expert use of kitchen tools, Kristen managed to trap the creature under a large metal cooking pot. But now what was she to do? She had two choices: turn the pot over and attempt to put a lid on it while risking the chance of a flying lizard to the face, or somehow get the thing into another container that it could not use its lizard wiles to escape. After many minutes of contemplation and failed attempts, Kristen surrounded the overturned pot with a garbage bag and slid a plate under the pot forcing the bag to completely engulf the cooking device and the lizard.
With a sense of fierce satisfaction, Kristen shook the lizard out of the pot, into the bag, and threw it into the garbage outside. Kristen:1 Lizard:0 When the victory had worn off a bit, Kristen returned to her apartment and proceeded to stuff Wal-mart sacks into the crack under her front door to prevent any further invasions of the unwanted creatures.
The End.
